About The priory 1101
The priory 1101 is one of the oldest buildings in Great Yarmouth, dating back to 1101AD. This medieval building is grade 1 listed and steeped in history, and is surrounded by an ancient grave yard. This amazing historic building was founded by by Herbert du Losinga, the first Bishop of Norwich. The Benedictine order of monks used to serve the Parish Church of St. Nicholas (Now the Minster). Many distinguished visitors were welcomed at the Priory, including Richard II and Mary Tudor, daughter of Henry VII.
Like many monasteries this the priory closed in 1536 , after its closure the building went in to decline, until 1853 when the building was restored and opened as a school. The school was named, St Nicholas priory school. The priory remained a school until its closure in 1999.
There is so much history associated with this location there is no surprise that there have been many ghostly sightings and spooky goings on, from possible poltergeist activity to full apparitions. The ghostly tales are endless, just like the buildings long history. Arrival is 15 minutes before the event start time, early admittance is not permitted.
