About Abbey House Museum
Abbey House Museum is located in Leeds, Yorkshire, the former gatehouse for the 12th-century Kirkstall Abbey. Kirkstall Abbey was founded in around 1152 by monks, following the Dissolution of the Monasteries under Henry VIII it fell into disrepair and eventually become a ruin. Its gatehouse was turned into a house and received lots of renovation over the coming years, including a 15th/16th-century wing and early 20th-century additions. It operated as a farmhouse and was also the home of the Butler family, the owners of Kirkstall Forge. In 1926, it was purchased by Leeds City Council.
The ground floor is now home to the recreated old Victorian streets to reflect life in the 19th Century. This location is said to be very haunted, with many reports of unexplainable happenings from visitors and staff. Staff and visitors have reported being touched and having their clothes pulled by unseen hands, the sounds of footsteps, ghostly utterances, dark figures moving around the recreated Victorian streets, doors opening and closing on their own, and sightings of monks.
